Electricity Deregulated States

State governments first introduced electricity deregulation over a decade ago with the hope of combating overpriced local utility monopolies. Officials hoped that increasing competition in the electric industry through deregulation would result in reduced electric rates, innovative energy alternatives, lower utility bills, and happier customers.

The initiative was successful and now the following 15 states have a deregulated electric utility industry. In these states, residents and business-owners can switch to a low-cost electric supplier and lower their monthly electric bill!

Note that a majority of the current deregulated states are located in the northeast, where electricity rates are among the highest in the nation. Customers in this region and throughout the U.S. can save hundreds - even thousands -- of dollars a year on electricity, all thanks to deregulation. Switching electric service to a more affordable supplier is fast, easy, and free.
